Tired of
paying supermarket prices for food? Worried about what
is in your food? Want to purchase food that has
travelled less food miles? Check out some of our tips
below.
-
Try to buy in season local
fruit. It will be fresher and will have travelled less
miles. Plus it will be supporting local growers.
-
Only buy what you need. You
don’t want to be throwing food out at the end of the
week
-
Avoid buying products with
excessive packaging. Do you really need to buy
pre-wrapped lettuce?
-
Take
your own mug to work or to your favourite coffee
takeout. Ask them to fill that up rather than get
a disposable cup.
-
Keep your fruit in the fridge
and only have a few pieces in the fruit bowl. It will
keep longer.
-
Support your local growers by
visiting your local farmers market. It will save you
money and the food tastes great. The food has also travelled less food miles to get to you.
-
Visit you local butcher and
fruit and vegetable shops - they are often cheaper and/or
better quality.
-
Grow your own fruit and
vegetables. You can't get fresher than from your garden.
You know what you are getting, it is good for you and
the family, and it tastes great too! The kids are
more likely to eat it if they helped to grow it, so get
them involved.
-
Eat
less red meat. Red meat production requires a lot
of water, and our agricultural industry is one of the
largest producers of the dangerous greenhouse gasses
methane.
-
Cook
your meals from scratch rather than buying ready meals.
Not only will it taste better, but it will be better for
you, and eliminates a lot of packaging.
-
If the
food will last, buy in bulk. It will usually work
out cheaper as you are not paying for as much packaging
and handling costs.
