Water Tanks

Water tanks are used to capture rainwater from your roof. The water can then be used to water the garden and wash the car, or it can be plumbed into your household supply for your toilets and washing machine, or even your drinking water.

Any water tank that is plumbed into your home will require a council permit.

Some councils (such as Waitakere City Council) require a water tank to be installed for all new house built, although a tank can be added to almost any property.

By installing a water tank you are helping to conserve our future water supply and will also save yourself money from those dreaded water bills. It also protects our storm water infrastructure, extending its life and reducing dangerous overflows

A fully plumbed tank and installation where it is not used for drinking water will cost you between $4000 and $6000, and annual maintenance of between $100 and $200. Some councils offer rebates on installation of up to $500 and waiver of the cost of the council permit.

Smaller rain barrels will cost less but will still provide water for outdoor use.
